The real threat

Wildfire embers can travel miles ahead of the flames.

Up to 90% of home ignitions during wildfires are caused by embers.

Wildfire embers can travel 1–5 miles ahead of an active fire front. In extreme wind-driven events, embers have been documented traveling up to 15 miles.

Carried by strong winds, these burning materials can enter vents, collect in gutters, ignite combustible landscaping, and find small vulnerabilities around the home.

Why it matters

Most homes do not need a wall of flames to ignite.

Wind-blown embers can travel miles ahead of the fire, enter vents, collect in gutters, ignite bark mulch, or catch on combustible materials near the house. Small vulnerabilities can become major ignition points.

Common vulnerabilities

  • Open or outdated attic, eave, and ridge vents
  • Debris-filled gutters and roof valleys
  • Combustible material within 0–5 feet of the home
  • Wood fence or deck connections that can carry fire
  • Gaps in siding, soffits, rooflines, and exterior penetrations

Bend is raising the standard

New home-hardening requirements are coming for new builds.

Beginning May 15, 2026, Bend’s new fire code for new builds—Section R327 of the Oregon Residential Specialty Code—focuses on home hardening and wildfire mitigation. The mandate requires new detached residential dwellings and accessory structures to be built with noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials.

For existing homes: these requirements may not apply directly, but they show where wildfire-resilient construction is heading. EmberGuard helps homeowners apply many of the same protection principles to homes already built.
